Each year, Korea welcomes 17.2 million visitors, making it one of the world’s top 20 most-visited countries. Many of these visitors, like you, come for similar reasons — K-pop, food, culture, and so much more.

Here’s the problem:

These 17.2 million visitors often end up in big, flashy malls tailored for tourists, missing out on authentic, local, and trendy experiences. The high costs at these tourist hotspots don’t help either. What travellers need is a unique, authentic travel experience that immerses them in Korean culture.

Pain Point

Korea is a homogenous country, and foreigners have a hard time making Korean friends, and vice versa.

Design Gap

At Google Maps Korea, we recognize this issue and see an opportunity to bring pop-up stores to travelers

Design Matrix

Based on the problem, we want to create a space where they can connect, make friends, learn different cultures, and diversify.

-> this will be done through gamification/ punch card

Key mood/ vibe : young, passionate, friendship, diversity

User Research

Our app need to serve two needs:

  1. locals want to learn English to connect with international visitors

  2. foreigners are lost / uninformed when it comes to pop-ups.

Design Opportunity

How might we make pop-ups more discoverable/more accessible for tourists and locals so that we can support small business owners?

Prototyping

User Testing

Our user testing revealed that distance is a top priority when selecting pop-up stores to visit—just like finding a nearby restaurant! With this feature, users can see pop-up store locations relative to where they are, see more with ratings, and an option to visit the store’s website for more details.

Effortless Navigation

A pop up store filter feature added to help user search for pop-up stores in the same way search for restaurants. Google Maps users will find it simple to navigate, because it has been highlighted with a gradient boarder and pop up window description. This placement allows users to dive right into discovering pop-up locations in a familiar, effortless way.

Surrounding Search

With this feature, users can see pop-up store locations relative to where they are, see more with ratings, and an option to visit the store’s website for more details.

Seamless connectivity

Seamless connectivity is key. With this new feature, you can save pop-up store opening time from google map directly to Google Calendar, integrating them smoothly into your plans. From pop-up events to location details, this connection keeps you updated in real-time, so you never miss out on an exciting new spot!

Personalized Experience

With the integration with google calendar, users can create a personalized experience. You’ll receive gentle reminders for saved pop-up stores, tailored to your travel plans, ensuring you never miss the experiences that matter to you.

Device Integration

Why our product is useful:

Say Goodbye to Outdated Travel Guides: Forget bulky travel books and outdated blogs; our app keeps you updated with the latest, most authentic experiences.

  1. connectivity/integration -> google calendar
